FIFA’s World Cup Sell-Off Plan: The September 19 Question

FIFA wants to sell a stake in the World Cup. UEFA is threatening a boycott, federations are revolting and a September 19 deadline looms. Here’s the story markets are watching.

FIFA wants to sell a piece of the World Cup. Nobody seems to want it sold.

The confetti from Spain's win over Argentina had barely been swept up when the next World Cup story broke. This one has nothing to do with football on the pitch, and everything to do with a question that has a hard deadline attached. For anyone who trades on outcomes rather than just arguing about them, that combination matters. A genuine yes or no, a date on the calendar, and new information landing daily. It's exactly the kind of story a prediction market was built to price.

Here's what's happening. Media reports on Tuesday revealed a plan for a $20 billion FIFA commercial subsidiary, backed by Joshua Kushner, with a stake of up to 20 percent offered to outside investors. Gianni Infantino followed up with a letter to FIFA's 211 member federations offering one-off payments of $20 million each, calling it a singular funding opportunity, and set a deadline of September 19 to accept.

The reaction was fast and it was brutal. UEFA threatened to boycott all FIFA games and events until the plan is dropped. Concacaf rejected the proposal outright. On Friday, Asia's confederation joined Europe and North America in opposing it.

Then came the resignation. Carlos Cordeiro, Infantino's own senior adviser and FIFA's man on the White House Task Force for the 2026 tournament, stepped down in protest, calling the plan a bad deal for football. He also asked the obvious question: why raise $4.2 billion by selling part of your most valuable asset when you're sitting on billions in reserves with no debt?

FIFA's response was blunt. Nobody is selling football, it said in a statement. The confederations representing most of the footballing world appear to disagree about what's happening.

Every headline between now and September 19 moves the probability. Boycott threats, resignations, federation votes. The market's call will shift with each one.
